Though she is not as famous as Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe, there is no doubt to the significant works the Irish architect and designer Eileen Gray has made in 20th century modern furniture. A resident as one of the leaders of the modernism movement in furniture design. Her ideas for designs which range from chairs to table designs, destroyed the standard conventions of furniture design and have inspired designers to this day.

Though she has created some furniture designs in her career, Eileen Gray is more typically known for one design, the Bibendum Chair. termed after the mascot of the Michelin tire company, the Bibendum chair is a large red leather chair with a mixture back and armrest made from padded leather tubes. The chair was custom built for the home of milliner Mathieu Levy in Rue de Lota, Paris, which Gray labored on from 1917 to 1921.

To grasp its equally wide girth, the Bibendum Chair was filled} with stainless steel tubes for legs and a beechwood frame in the seat’s core. The seat also shows new for additional support and comfort. And to match the interior furnishings of the apartment it was ade for (notably the tribal wall hangings), Eileen Gray coated the Bibendum Chair with soft red leather in plain red.

In addition to the Bibendum Chair, Eileen Gray also made some designs for furniture and appliances, such as the E-1027 bedside table and tube light, as well as doing her professional profession in architecture. However, her creations have almost washed out into darkness until the 1970s, when her designs were revived during an auction. presently Gray’s furniture designs are highly looked after by collectors and furniture lovers alike.
